ENGLAND head coach Andy Flower was furious last night after blundering umpire Daryl Harper forgot to turn up his TV volume.

The incredible cock-up meant Harper failed to give Graeme Smith out for a catch behind on 15 - and the South Africa skipper went on to score his second century on the trot.

It was one of the most bizarre umpiring mistakes of all time because Harper simply did not twiddle the knob on a monitor in the third umpire's box.

England will lodge an official complaint and the ICC could come under pressure to remove Harper from the elite panel of umpires because the players have lost trust in him.

Harper's howler followed the two outrageous clangers as the on-field umpire during last week's Third Test.

Smith scored 105 in the wake of his 183 in Cape Town and, by the close of a day in which three hours were lost because of a humungous thunderstorm, South Africa were 215-2, already 35 runs ahead.

The extraordinary chain of events began when Smith slashed at a ball from Ryan Sidebottom. Matt Prior and the slip cordon instantly went up for the catch.

They were in no doubt that Smith nicked the ball - but umpire Tony Hill remained unmoved.

Captain Andrew Strauss called for the review and Sky viewers in the UK heard the clear noise as Smith edged the ball. But Harper was deaf to the nick because his volume was down.

Flower said: "The match referee explained that the third umpire gets a different audio feed from TV.

"But, on subsequent investigation by us, we found that wasn't correct - one audio feed is used for everyone.

"So I went to see him again and this time he said Daryl Harper hadn't switched up the volume. That's why we heard the nick - and the third umpire didn't. If it wasn't such a serious match for us, I would have found it quite amusing. I think it is very disappointing.

WAGs Swap footie for cricket

THERE'S nothing quite like a Cricket fashion show to bring the WAGs out in force.

COLEEN ROONEY, ALEX CURRAN and CLAUDINE KEANE were all in attendance catwalk-side to review their favourite Liverpool shop's new designs.
